Profile Type: Institutional Location: Moncton, New Brunswick
NBCC Moncton’s latest addition, the NEW three storey ‘E’ Block, is the campus’ first LEED standard building. The building’s contemporary rectilinear form is aligned to a true north/south axis, maximizing daylighting and solar control strategies. Bold yellow metal canopies supported by concrete piers announce the entry points in contrast with the syncopated grey and white tones of textured metal cladding. A transparent skybridge connects the wing to the existing complex on the second and third levels.
Its’ volume houses 400 additional training spaces with 27 classrooms for various technology and business programs, as well as important student social spaces, locker areas and instructor rooms.
Designed with the goal of achieving a LEED Silver accreditation from the Canada Green Building Council, sustainable design strategies include building orientation, generous daylighting incorporating glare control, automated artificial lighting, low flow plumbing fixtures, high efficiency condensing gas boilers, HVAC controls integrated with contact shut-offs on operable windows, a superior performance building enclosure, site and parking stormwater management, and bike racks. Interpretative panels are part of an education strategy to inform users and the public about the various systems incorporated in the design.
The NBCC Moncton Campus opened its doors in 1961 and currently serves in excess of 4000 students each academic year.
