The clients requested a custom 3 bedroom home, with 2500 sq. ft. of contemporary, liveable space, incorporating current energy efficient and sustainable strategies. In addition, they wanted the design to grow from the site, taking advantage of the views, integrating with the slope, and saving the existing mature spruce grove occupying the high ground adjacent their Street.
A narrow sloped clearing dictated a long house concept oriented north / south, built over multiple levels and focused on the River at the northern edge of the property. Punctuated with a bridged entranceway at the main level, a massive 3 story sandstone fireplace on the north face, and a dramatic wedge shaped copper roof, the design is animated with balance, warmth and drama. Functions are arranged in hierarchical fashion about the lower Family Room level, the middle Living Room level and the upper Master Bedroom level.
The high performance Enclosure is built with superior insulation values in walls and in the roof. Geothermal heat pumps supply energy for in-floor heating, domestic hot water needs and air conditioning on all levels. A roof-mounted photo voltaic array on a two way meter supplies energy to the grid.
