Upon arrival, a generous entrance canopy signals welcome and protection, framing the approach to the hospital’s main doors. Inside, a soaring double-height lobby offers orientation and light, anchored by natural materials and expansive glazing that draws the wooded landscape into the heart of the building. This open and airy threshold serves as the heart of the facility, connecting the diagnostic and treatment zones with inpatient care while creating a moment of pause for patients, visitors, and staff alike.
The hospital is organized around two primary volumes: a five-storey inpatient tower that maximizes views of the Miramichi River, and a lower three-storey wing housing clinical, diagnostic, and administrative functions. The tower’s uppermost floor offers a light-filled cafeteria perched above the treetops—a quiet refuge where natural vistas support mental and emotional well-being.
Conceived through extensive collaboration with hospital staff, the design reflects both clinical precision and human scale. Durable steel framing and composite floor construction provide flexibility for evolving medical needs, while also ensuring structural resilience. Since its opening in 1996, the hospital has continued to evolve. A series of renovations and upgrades over the years, carried out by the original design team, has sustained its ability to meet the changing demands of healthcare delivery without compromising its architectural clarity.
